Birds in U.S. zoos

Birds are where zoos vary most and where visitors pay the least attention. A strong bird collection is a genuine marker of institutional depth: aviaries are expensive, mixed-species flight spaces are difficult to manage, and species like cranes, hornbills and raptors need far more room than their size suggests. Some of the most significant conservation breeding work in North American zoos happens with birds, often in off-display facilities the public never sees. A zoo that treats its aviary as a real exhibit rather than a covered walkway between mammal houses is usually one that takes its whole collection seriously.
