About the parrot

Parrots, the order Psittaciformes, are birds with a strong curved beak, an upright stance and clawed feet. Roughly 410 species in 101 genera are classified in four families, including cockatoos and the New Zealand parrots, and they are found mostly in tropical and subtropical regions. Most diets rest on seeds, nuts, fruit, buds and other plant material, while lories and lorikeets specialise in nectar and soft fruit. Almost all parrots nest in tree hollows and lay white eggs. Among the most intelligent birds, some species can imitate human speech. Living species range from the buff-faced pygmy parrot, at under 10 g, to the hyacinth macaw, at 1 m long.
