About the troupial

The Venezuelan troupial, the national bird of Venezuela, is found in Colombia, Venezuela and several Caribbean islands including Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, Trinidad and Puerto Rico. It is a fairly large bird with a long tail and bulky bill, a black head and upper breast, orange underparts and back, and black wings marked with a white streak. Each yellow eye is ringed by bright blue bare skin. It lives in dry woodland, scrub, plains and open savanna, where it eats fruit, including the fruits of the giant cactus, and sometimes the young and eggs of other birds. It builds no nest of its own and instead takes over those of others.

Troupial facts

  • It is an obligate nest pirate, taking vacant nests or driving owners out of active ones.
  • The name troupial comes from a French word meaning troop, because the birds live in flocks.
  • Pairs sing duets to defend territory and keep in contact.
  • In season, giant cactus fruit makes up its entire diet.

AZAThe Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Accredited members have passed an independent inspection of animal care and welfare, safety, conservation and education, repeated every five years. Many smaller facilities never apply, so “not accredited” isn't a verdict on its own. What accreditation means · How we check this
