About the freckled duck
The freckled duck is a waterfowl species found only in Australia, mostly in inland eastern regions and also in South Australia and Western Australia. Adults are 50 to 60 cm long, with dark grey to black plumage covered in small white flecks. It prefers large, freshwater wetlands with thick vegetation and travels long distances to find a good breeding site. In dry periods it disperses to coastal wetlands. A filter feeder, it strains aquatic plants, insects, algae, larvae and crustaceans from shallow water. Males develop a red base to the bill during the breeding season.
