About the red-shouldered hawk

The red-shouldered hawk is a medium-sized buteo that breeds across eastern North America, along the coast of California and in northern Mexico. Adults have brownish heads, reddish chests, pale bellies barred with red, and a long tail marked with narrow white bars; the red shoulders show when the bird is perched. It is a forest raptor, living in bottomland hardwoods, swamps and mixed woodland, and in some suburban areas. It hunts from a perch or while soaring, dropping onto prey such as voles, mice and chipmunks, along with amphibians, small snakes and birds. It is a permanent resident through most of its range.
