About the narragansett turkey
The Narragansett turkey is a breed of Meleagris gallopavo descended from a cross between the eastern wild turkey and the domestic turkey. It is named for Narragansett Bay and the Narragansett people. Its plumage blends black, gray, tan and white, and it resembles the Bronze turkey except that gray or dull black replaces the coppery tones. Young toms weigh 22–28 pounds and hens 12–16 pounds. The birds are calm, mature early and lay well, and they forage for crickets, grasshoppers and other insects. They run quickly, fly well and prefer to roost in trees at night. The breed became the foundation of the turkey industry in New England.
