About the green-winged teal

The green-winged teal, or American teal, is a common and widespread dabbling duck that breeds across the northern areas of North America. It is the smallest North American dabbling duck, measuring 31–39 cm (12.2–15.4 in) in length and weighing 140–500 g. The breeding male has a chestnut head with a green eye patch, finely barred gray flanks and a white-edged green speculum. Females are light brown and resemble female mallards. It favors sheltered wetlands such as taiga bogs, feeding by dabbling or grazing on seeds, stems and leaves, and nests on the ground near water under cover. It is strongly migratory, winters as far south as Central America and forms large flocks outside the breeding season.
