About the australian wood duck

The Australian wood duck, also called the maned duck or maned goose, is a dabbling duck found throughout much of Australia, including Tasmania. It is 45 to 51 cm long, looks like a small goose, and feeds mostly by grazing in flocks, preferring to forage on land. Males are grey with a dark brown head and mottled breast, while females have white stripes above and below the eye. It occurs in grasslands, open woodlands, wetlands, flooded pastures and coastal inlets, and is common on farmland with dams and in urban parks. Nests are in tree cavities or nest boxes near water, lined with down, holding 9 to 11 cream-white eggs.

Australian Wood Duck facts

  • It is the only living species in the genus Chenonetta.
  • Genetic evidence places it near the blue duck of New Zealand and the pantropical comb ducks.
  • Ducklings leap from the nest to the ground after the female flies down.
  • It has been introduced to western Europe, particularly the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
