About the indian runner duck

Indian Runners are a breed of domestic duck that stand erect like penguins and run rather than waddle. The upright carriage comes from a pelvic girdle set closer to the tail than in other duck breeds, and the birds do not fly. They were bred on the Indonesian islands of Lombok, Java and Bali, and appear to be depicted in stone sculptures in Java from about 1000 AD. Adults weigh 1.4 to 2.3 kg and stand 50 to 76 cm tall, with a long, slim body and a long, wedge-shaped head. The breed is known for heavy egg production; a 2021 study recorded an average of 173.74 eggs per bird. It reached the Western world in the 19th century.

Indian Runner Duck facts

  • In 1856 Alfred Russel Wallace noted that ducks on Lombok "walk erect, like penguins".
  • The breed became popular in Europe and America as an egg layer in the late nineteenth century.
  • Rice-duck farming raises ducks and rice on the same land, with duck manure benefiting the crop.
  • They come in a wide variety of colours, some seen in seventeenth-century Dutch paintings.
