About the broad-winged hawk

The broad-winged hawk is a medium-sized hawk, 32 to 44 cm long, with short, broad wings, a dark brown back and a white chest barred horizontally. It breeds in deciduous forests of eastern North America and forages in wetlands and meadows. Migratory populations winter from Florida and Mexico south to southern Brazil, while five subspecies live year-round on Caribbean islands. It eats insects, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and birds, depending on the season. On migration it rides thermals in flocks called kettles that can number several thousand birds, covering about 100 km per day.
