Reptiles in U.S. zoos

Reptile houses are the most variable buildings in American zoos. At their worst they are dim corridors of small tanks where half the occupants are hidden under a log and the signage hasn't been updated in a decade. At their best they are climate-controlled, carefully lit, and designed so that visitors actually see animals that spend most of their lives motionless — which takes real thought about sightlines and enclosure depth. Reptiles also carry a disproportionate share of zoo conservation work, particularly with turtles and tortoises, where captive breeding is sometimes the only thing standing between a species and extinction.
