About the yellow-bellied slider

The yellow-bellied slider is a semiaquatic turtle native to the southeastern United States, from Florida to southeastern Virginia, where it is the most common turtle in its range. It lives in slow rivers, floodplain swamps, marshes and ponds. The brown and black shell often carries yellow stripes, the skin is olive green with yellow patches on the neck and legs, and the lower shell is mostly yellow with dark spots along the edges. Females grow larger than males. Mating takes place in the water, and nesting females come ashore to lay six to ten eggs. It overwinters in bank burrows or buried at the bottom of a pond.

Yellow-bellied Slider facts

  • Buried underwater in winter, it can take in oxygen through cloacal respiration.
  • In cold climates its heart tissue restructures to lower its metabolic rate through winter.
  • Released pet sliders have become invasive in Europe, and scientists track them using environmental DNA.
  • Females reach 20-33 cm in shell length, males only 13-23 cm.
