About the panther chameleon
The panther chameleon lives in the eastern and northern parts of Madagascar, in rainforest in the east and drier broken forest and savannah in the northwest, and has been introduced to Réunion, Mauritius and Florida. Adults grow 40 to 51 cm long, with males larger and more vividly coloured than females. Colour varies by region: blue around Nosy Be, Ankify and Ambanja, and red, green or orange around Ambilobe, Antsiranana and Sambava. It catches mostly terrestrial invertebrates with a tongue sometimes longer than its body. It is very territorial and lives mostly alone; rival males change colour and inflate their bodies to assert dominance.
