About Summerfield Zoo

Summerfield Zoo, branded on its website as Summerfield Farm and Zoo, is at 3088 Flora Road in Belvidere, Illinois, near Rockford and a few minutes from I-90. The zoo says its aim is to create an unforgettable experience for families and animal lovers, and that visitor support helps build and maintain exhibits and feed the animals. It is not accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The website says many of its animals are rescues. Animals listed on its About page include two-toed sloths, capybaras, mountain lions, river otters, arctic wolves, alligators, tortoises, peacocks, and cockatoos.

Exhibits and habitats

Animals named on the zoo's pages include a sloth, capybaras, lemurs, a Canadian lynx kitten, a bobcat, a mountain lion, and an alligator. Goats feature in the visit page's list of activities, including bottle feeding for baby goats and feed for adult goats. Reindeer are a seasonal attraction during the holiday event.

Conservation and programs

The zoo offers several programs. Private animal encounters are listed with a sloth, capybaras, or lemurs, and the website has a page for encounters and field trips. A summer camp for ages 6 to 12 is described as a chance to be a zookeeper for a week. Christmas Town is a seasonal event with live reindeer, Santa, and elves; the visit page notes that season passes do not apply to it. The zoo also lists a Friends of the Zoo page, a wish list, a gift shop, and online gift certificates.

Planning your visit

As listed on the zoo's visit page, the zoo is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with animal shows on Saturdays and Sundays at noon and 2 p.m. The home page's hours panel reads "By Appointment." Season passes are offered and serve as photo IDs, and ticket details are on the website.

The zoo's rules say no outside food or beverages, no pets, no smoking, and no littering on the grounds or in parking areas. The visit page lists a portable restroom on site. The zoo links to its Facebook and Instagram accounts.

AZAThe Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Accredited members have passed an independent inspection of animal care and welfare, safety, conservation and education, repeated every five years. Many smaller facilities never apply, so “not accredited” isn't a verdict on its own. What accreditation means · How we check this
