About the golden mantella
The golden mantella is a small, terrestrial frog found only in Madagascar, in a few restricted areas centred on the town of Moramanga. Adults measure just 20-26 mm and are uniformly yellow, orange or red, with red flash marks on the inner legs; the bright colour is thought to warn predators that the frog is poisonous. It is active by day in summer and largely inactive from May to October, and groups usually hold about twice as many males as females. It eats small invertebrates such as mites, ants, flies and collembolans, and gets its skin toxins from this diet.
Golden Mantella facts
- Males call from concealed spots near water with a repeated, pleasant click.
- Rather than true amplexus, the male only moves himself over the female's back in a virtual form.
- Eggs are laid on land in moist leaf litter and the tadpoles are washed into water when rains arrive.
- The species was described in 1900 from a single male measuring 21.2 mm.

AZAThe Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Accredited members have passed an independent inspection of animal care and welfare, safety, conservation and education, repeated every five years. Many smaller facilities never apply, so “not accredited” isn't a verdict on its own. What accreditation means · How we check this
