About the owl monkey

Owl monkeys, also called night monkeys or douroucoulis, are nocturnal New World monkeys of the genus Aotus, which has eleven species. They live across Panama and much of South America, in primary and secondary forest, tropical rainforest and cloud forest up to 2,400 metres. Large eyes aid vision at night, and the ears are mostly hidden, hence the name Aotus, meaning earless. They are the only truly nocturnal monkeys. They live in small family groups of a mated pair and their young, and are primarily frugivorous, with some leaves and insects. Only one infant is born each year, and the male is the primary caregiver.

Owl Monkey facts

  • Males carry the infant up to 90% of the time.
  • They are one of the few monkeys affected by human malaria, so are used in malaria research.
  • Night monkeys have monochromatic vision, and smell helps them judge fruit.
  • The Peruvian night monkey is classified as Endangered by the IUCN.
