About the monkey

Monkey is a common name for most members of the primate infraorder Simiiformes, traditionally excluding the apes. Two separate groups are recognised: New World monkeys of Central and South America, and Old World monkeys of Africa and Asia. Many species live in trees, though some, such as baboons, live mainly on the ground, and most are active by day. Diets vary by species and may include fruit, leaves, seeds, nuts, flowers, eggs and small animals such as insects and spiders. Sizes range from the pygmy marmoset, which weighs just over 100 g, to the male mandrill, which can reach 36 kg.

Monkey facts

  • Pygmy marmosets can be as small as 117 mm long, while male mandrills weigh up to 36 kg.
  • Most New World monkeys have long tails, and those in the Atelidae family have prehensile tails.
  • Old World monkeys have trichromatic colour vision like humans; New World monkeys may be trichromatic, dichromatic or monochromatic.
  • Lemurs, lorises and tarsiers are not monkeys.

AZAThe Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Accredited members have passed an independent inspection of animal care and welfare, safety, conservation and education, repeated every five years. Many smaller facilities never apply, so “not accredited” isn't a verdict on its own. What accreditation means · How we check this
