About the moose

The moose is the largest living member of the deer family, with mature bulls in North America standing over six feet at the shoulder and weighing up to 1,500 pounds. It is a creature of cold northern forest, ranging across Canada, Alaska, the northern tier of the contiguous United States, Scandinavia and Russia, and it depends on wetlands, willow thickets and lake margins for summer browse. Bulls grow and shed a set of broad palmate antlers every year, a cycle driven by day length and among the fastest tissue growth of any mammal. Moose are strong swimmers and will feed on submerged aquatic plants, closing their nostrils to reach vegetation on lake bottoms. They are solitary outside the autumn rut and are poorly adapted to heat, which makes them sensitive to warming winters, expanding tick populations and shifting forest composition across the southern edge of their range.

Moose facts

  • A large bull can carry antlers spanning six feet across and weighing over 40 pounds — regrown from nothing every year.
  • Moose routinely dive for aquatic plants and can hold their breath for around thirty seconds.
  • They are the only deer adapted to feed on submerged vegetation.

AZAThe Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Accredited members have passed an independent inspection of animal care and welfare, safety, conservation and education, repeated every five years. Many smaller facilities never apply, so “not accredited” isn't a verdict on its own. What accreditation means · How we check this
