About the deer

Deer are hoofed ruminant mammals of the family Cervidae, divided into the subfamilies Cervinae, which includes red and fallow deer, and Capreolinae, which includes reindeer, white-tailed deer and moose. Males of almost all species, along with female reindeer, grow and shed new antlers each year; these bony extensions of the skull are often used in combat between males. Deer live in habitats from tundra to tropical rainforest, many in transitional zones between forest cover and open ground. They are native to every continent except Antarctica and Australia, and Africa has only one native deer, the Barbary stag of the Atlas Mountains.

Deer facts

  • The water deer is the one deer species in which males do not grow antlers.
  • Old English dēor once meant any wild animal, not just deer.
  • Africa has only one native deer, the Barbary stag, a subspecies of red deer.
  • Deer appear in art from Paleolithic cave paintings onwards.

AZAThe Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Accredited members have passed an independent inspection of animal care and welfare, safety, conservation and education, repeated every five years. Many smaller facilities never apply, so “not accredited” isn't a verdict on its own. What accreditation means · How we check this
