About the common wallaroo
The common wallaroo, also known as the euro or hill wallaroo, is a macropod, in the same family of marsupials as kangaroos and wallabies. It lives in Australia and has four subspecies, from the dark grey eastern wallaroo along the eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range to the brownish euro in the west and the pale Kimberley wallaroo in the north. It is mostly nocturnal and solitary and can make a loud hissing noise. Females can give birth at any time of year, and a pregnancy can follow soon after birth, with the embryo pausing its development until the previous joey leaves the pouch. Joeys begin leaving the pouch at about six months.
Common Wallaroo facts
- Through embryonic diapause, a female's new embryo does not develop until the previous joey leaves the pouch.
- Gestation lasts only around 30 to 38 days.
- The Kimberley subspecies manages in areas without permanent water on poor-quality grasses.
- Males fight over mating access in contests that are not deadly.
