About the collared lemur
The collared brown lemur, also called the red-collared lemur, is a medium-sized primate found only in the moist lowland and montane forests of south-eastern Madagascar. Adults weigh about 2.25 to 2.5 kg, and males and females differ in coloration. It is arboreal, moving on all fours and occasionally leaping between trees. It is cathemeral, active both day and night, and lives in social groups of two to seventeen individuals. Its diet is flexible, with fruit from over 100 plant species, and it acts as a seed disperser, which is especially important for large-seeded trees. Its range does not overlap with other brown lemurs.
Collared Lemur facts
- It was promoted from a subspecies of the common brown lemur to a full species in 2001.
- It eats fruit from more than 100 plant species.
- It may be the last remaining seed disperser for some large-seeded trees.
- In captivity it is easily confused with the gray-headed lemur.
