About the antelope

Antelope is a term for many members of the family Bovidae, the hoofed mammals that also include cattle, sheep and goats. Bovids vary greatly in size and colour, but nearly all males carry horns, which are unbranched bony growths of the skull covered in a permanent keratin sheath, often spiral or twisted. The greatest diversity occurs in Africa, with the most species in the savannas of Eastern Africa. Most bovids are active in the daytime, feed and ruminate throughout the day, and peak in activity at dawn and dusk. Small species such as the klipspringer, oribi and steenbok are generally solitary and territorial.

Antelope facts

  • Horns are small spikes in monogamous duikers but large and elaborate in polygynous species such as the giant eland.
  • Most bovids have 30 to 32 teeth.
  • In many bovid species females carry horns too.
  • Cattle, sheep and goats are bovids whose domestic use has spread worldwide.

AZAThe Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Accredited members have passed an independent inspection of animal care and welfare, safety, conservation and education, repeated every five years. Many smaller facilities never apply, so “not accredited” isn't a verdict on its own. What accreditation means · How we check this
