About the domestic pig
The domestic pig is an omnivorous, hoofed, even-toed mammal that is considered either a subspecies of the wild boar or a species in its own right. Pigs were domesticated independently twice during the Neolithic, once in the Near East around the Tigris Basin and once in China. They are farmed mainly for pork, and about 1.5 billion are raised each year. A long snout stiffened by a prenasal bone and a cartilage disk serves as both a digging tool and an acute sense organ. Pigs do not use sweat glands to cool down, so they lose heat by wallowing in mud or water.
