Zoos in Ohio
Ohio has some of the most established zoos in the country, spread across its major cities. Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden opened in 1875 on 64.5 acres and has been AZA accredited since 1978, while Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, founded in 1882, covers 183 acres as part of the Metroparks system. Akron Zoo sits on 77 acres west of downtown, and Toledo Zoo & Aquarium began in 1900 with a single donated woodchuck. In the southeast, The Wilds near Cumberland opened in 1994 as a safari park on nearly 10,000 acres of former surface-mined land. For something smaller, The Farm at Walnut Creek in Sugarcreek offers drive-through and wagon animal feeding in Amish Country.
