About the sea anemone
Sea anemones are predatory marine invertebrates of the order Actiniaria, related to corals and jellyfish. A typical anemone is a single polyp attached to a hard surface by its base, with a column-shaped body topped by an oral disc, a central mouth and rings of tentacles armed with stinging cells. Most are 1 to 5 cm in diameter, though some exceed a metre across. The tentacles paralyse prey such as fish and crustaceans with venom. In many species, extra nourishment comes from symbiotic algae living within their cells, and some species live alongside clownfish, hermit crabs and other animals.
Sea Anemone facts
- Clownfish are unaffected by an anemone's sting and shelter among its tentacles.
- Anemones have an incomplete gut, so one opening works as both mouth and anus.
- Anemones can reproduce asexually by breaking in half or into smaller pieces that regenerate into polyps.
- Some aggregating anemones have acrorhagi, inflatable organs used to fend off encroaching anemones.
