About the dall sheep
Dall sheep are wild sheep of the subarctic and arctic mountains of northwestern North America, ranging across Alaska, the Yukon, the western Northwest Territories and northern British Columbia. Off-white in color, they stand about 0.9 m at the shoulder and live on dry alpine tundra, meadows and steep, rugged ground that offers both grazing and escape from predators. They browse grasses, sedges and willow, and visit mineral licks to supplement their diet. Rams carry massive curling horns and settle rank by charging and colliding head-on. Outside the November to December rut, rams and ewes rarely share groups.
Dall Sheep facts
- Rams run at each other and collide horns-first to establish rank, not to win ewes.
- Growth rings in a ram's horns can be used to estimate age.
- Winter coats can be over 5 cm thick, over a fine wool undercoat.
- Dall sheep have been known to butt gray wolves off cliff faces.

AZAThe Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Accredited members have passed an independent inspection of animal care and welfare, safety, conservation and education, repeated every five years. Many smaller facilities never apply, so “not accredited” isn't a verdict on its own. What accreditation means · How we check this
