About the belted galloway

The Belted Galloway is a traditional Scottish beef breed from the Galloway region of south-western Scotland, adapted to poor upland pastures and windswept moorlands. The coat is normally black, occasionally dun or, more rarely, red, and always carries a broad white belt that completely encircles the body between the shoulders and hind legs. The double coat has a long coarse outer layer against rain and a fine soft undercoat, so the cattle need no thick fat for winter warmth and are normally kept outdoors throughout the winter. They are generally quiet, though cows protect their calves strongly. Besides beef, they are used for conservation grazing.

Belted Galloway facts

  • The white belt is thought to come from crossbreeding with the Dutch Lakenvelder in the seventeenth century.
  • Bulls may carry no white anywhere except the belt.
  • Because the coat insulates, the meat tends to be lean.
  • It was established as a separate breed in 1921 and has since been exported to many countries.
