About the wolf's guenon

Wolf's mona monkey, also called Wolf's guenon, is a colourful Old World monkey of central Africa, found mainly between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. It lives in primary and secondary lowland rainforest and swamp forest. The coat is dark grey with a red saddle on the back, and the cheek whiskers and ear tufts are bright, with variation between its two subspecies. It eats mostly fruit, adding seeds, insects and young, easily digested leaves. Groups consist of one male with several females, and males leave the group at sexual maturity. It was described in 1891 from a specimen brought from central west Africa in 1887 by Dr Ludwig Wolf, after whom it is named.

Wolf's Guenon facts

  • Its main predators are the crowned eagle and the leopard.
  • The two subspecies are separated by a large area of swamp forest.
  • The species is named after Dr Ludwig Wolf, who collected the first specimen.
