Zoos in Tennessee
Tennessee's zoos are anchored by four AZA-accredited city zoos spread across the state, with a cluster of smaller attractions near the Smoky Mountains. Memphis Zoo, in Overton Park in Midtown Memphis, opened in 1906 and occupies 76 acres. Nashville Zoo at Grassmere covers 188 acres on the former Grassmere property and lists 3,736 animals representing 352 species. Zoo Knoxville, a 53-acre zoo just east of downtown, grew out of a Depression-era children's park, and Chattanooga Zoo at Warner Park sits on 13 acres. In the mountain tourist corridor, Parrot Mountain and Garden of Eden in Pigeon Forge is a bird park on four acres of gardens, and Rainforest Adventures Discovery Zoo in Sevierville focuses on tropical animals.
