Zoos in Arizona

Arizona's zoos range from large urban institutions to roadside parks and sanctuaries. In Tucson, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum opened in 1952 on 98 acres and is AZA-accredited, with a collection built around the Sonoran Desert, while Reid Park Zoo is a city-run, AZA-accredited zoo on 24 acres. In Phoenix, the 125-acre Phoenix Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Farther north, Bearizona in Williams pairs a drive-through route with a walk-through area along Route 66, and in Window Rock the Navajo Nation Zoological and Botanical Park, open since 1963, labels its exhibits in the Navajo language.
