About Capital of Texas Zoo
Capital of Texas Zoo is at 376 A Jenkins Road in Cedar Creek, Texas. Its website describes it as "a pretty, intimate little place with happy and healthy animals" on 27 acres, and says its focus is breeding programs for fourteen endangered species. The zoo is not accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Exhibits and habitats
The zoo's website names Tank the hippo, listed at 4,000 pounds, along with Asian small-clawed otters named Kumo and Okami, lemurs, Australian dingoes, a red kangaroo, a crocodile, a troop of grivet monkeys and guinea pigs. Each of these species is offered as an encounter.
Conservation and programs
The website says the zoo breeds Australian dingoes, which it describes as endangered because of hybridizing with feral domestic dogs, and states that it is currently one of the only zoos in the United States doing so.
Encounters listed on the website include:
- Hand-feeding lemurs bananas.
- Petting and photographing an otter, which the website says may not be available on Tuesdays.
- Hand-feeding the grivet monkeys and feeding and petting the kangaroo.
- Tossing treats to the hippo.
- Feeding the crocodile with four-foot tongs.
- Holding baby guinea pigs, which the zoo designs for preschoolers.
- Swimming with otters, which the zoo lists as its newest encounter, booked for two people at a time.
The zoo also has a Junior Keeper volunteer program for ages 13 and up, in which participants work alongside a zookeeper and are asked to commit to one year of volunteering. Other services listed are field trips, traveling animal shows, and events such as birthday parties and weddings in the zoo's Peacock Pavilion. The zoo asks event guests not to bring balloons, plastic straws, pinatas or cascarones, for the safety of the animals.
Planning your visit
As listed on the zoo's website, it is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 365 days a year. Admission categories include teen and adult, child, senior and military, with children under 2 free, and annual memberships are offered. Prices are on the zoo's website. The website asks visitors to bring a driver's license when paying by card. Otter swim bookings may be rescheduled once without penalty, or more times if thunderstorms are forecast.

Distances are straight-line. A dash means we haven't confirmed that detail yet, not that the zoo lacks it.
AZAThe Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Accredited members have passed an independent inspection of animal care and welfare, safety, conservation and education, repeated every five years. Many smaller facilities never apply, so “not accredited” isn't a verdict on its own. What accreditation means · How we check this
