Zoos in Rhode Island
Rhode Island has one listed zoo, which suits a state this small. Roger Williams Park Zoo sits inside Roger Williams Park in Providence, at 1000 Elmwood Avenue, and traces its history to 1872, making it one of the older zoos in the country still operating. It is an AZA-accredited nonprofit with more than 800 animals, and its habitats are grouped into named zones by region and theme. The walking path runs a little over a mile, mostly wheelchair accessible though with some hills and unpaved stretches, and the zoo reports that an average visit lasts about three hours. Because it is the only zoo listed for the state, a visit to Rhode Island's zoo means a trip to Providence.
