Zoos in Maine
Maine has two listed zoo-type attractions, and neither is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. York's Wild Kingdom Zoo on the southern coast pairs a zoo with an amusement park and says it has operated since 1980; its animals include African lions, Bengal tigers and ring-tailed lemurs, and its Butterfly Kingdom exhibit opened in 2005. Kisma Preserve, on the other side of the state near Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park, is a donor-funded nonprofit that offers lifetime homes for non-domesticated animals. Its visits are guided tours rather than a self-guided walk, with a wolf encounter listed as its most popular experience, so plan ahead before arriving.
